Structural Vulnerability Analysis of Electric Power Distribution Grids
نویسندگان
چکیده
Power grid outages cause huge economical and societal costs. Disruptions in the power distribution grid are responsible for a significant fraction of electric power unavailability to customers. The impact of extreme weather conditions, continuously increasing demand, and the over-ageing of assets in the grid, deteriorates the safety of electric power delivery in the near future. It is this dependence on electric power that necessitates further research in the power distribution grid security assessment. Thus measures to analyse the robustness characteristics and to identify vulnerabilities as they exist in the grid are of utmost importance. This research investigates exactly those conceptsthe vulnerability and robustness of power distribution grids from a topological point of view, and proposes a metric to quantify them with respect to assets in a distribution grid. Real-world data is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed metric as a tool to assess the criticality of assets in a distribution grid. Space Weather and Power Grids - A Vulnerability Assessment
Strong geomagnetic disturbances resulting from solar activity can have a major impact on ground-based infrastructures, such as power grids, pipelines and railway systems. The high voltage transmission network is particularly affected as currents induced by geomagnetic storms, so-called GICs, can severely damage network equipment possibly leading to system collapse. Therefore, increasing attenti...

In this paper, Plug-in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (PFCEV) is considered with dual power sources including Fuel Cell (FC) and battery Energy Storage. In order to respond to a transient power demand, usually supercapacitor energy storage device is combined with fuel cell to create a hybrid system with high energy density of fuel cell and the high power density of battery. In order to simulate the...
متن کاملA Novel Method for Implementing of Time-of-use to Improve the Performance of Electric Distribution Systems: A Case Study
Increased electric energy consumption in recent years, associated economic problems, reduced reliability and increased power losses in electric networks. One of the main solutions in smart grids to overcome the mentioned problems is demand response programs. In demand response programs, operators apply time-varying tariffs to consumers, and convince them to change their consumption pattern. Amo...
متن کاملThe structure of electrical networks: a graph theory based analysis
We study the vulnerability of electrical networks through structural analysis from a graph theory point of view. We measure and compare several important structural properties of different electrical networks, including a real power grid and several synthetic grids, as well as other infrastructural networks. The properties we consider include the minimum dominating set size, the degree distribu...
متن کاملContext-Independent Centrality Measures Underestimate the Vulnerability of Power Grids
Power grids vulnerability is a key issue in society. A component failure may trigger cascades of failures across the grid and lead to a large blackout. Complex network approaches have shown a direction to study some of the problems faced by power grids. Within Complex Network Analysis structural vulnerabilities of power grids have been studied mostly using purely topological approaches, which a...
